Answer these 12 questions. It takes about three minutes. Tap “What does this mean?” under any question if you’re not sure how to answer.

  1. 1.Do you have an offer or Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for a registered course in Australia?
    What does this mean?

An offer letter comes from the school, college or university once you are accepted. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued after you accept the offer and pay a deposit. You need the CoE to lodge the visa. The course must be registered on CRICOS.

  2. 2.Is the course full time?
    What does this mean?

Your education provider will tell you whether the course is full time. Part-time and online-only courses do not qualify.

  3. 3.Do you have English test results that meet your course and visa requirements?
    What does this mean?

Accepted tests include IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, among others. Results usually need to be less than 2 years old. Some people are exempt, for example citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland, or people who studied in English in some countries.

  4. 4.Can you show enough money for your first year of tuition, living costs and travel?
    What does this mean?

You need to show you can pay for your first year of tuition, living costs (about $30,000 a year for a single student, updated from time to time) and travel. The money can come from you, your parents or your partner, and must be genuinely available to you.

  5. 5.Will you be under 18 when your course starts?
    What does this mean?

Answer 'Yes' if you will be 17 or younger on the date your course begins.

  6. 6.Have you had a gap of more than 2 years in your study or work at any time since finishing school?
    What does this mean?

A gap means a period of more than 2 years when you were neither studying nor working, or when you were working in a field unrelated to your course. Gaps are common and not a problem on their own, but they need to be explained.

  7. 7.Are you in Australia now?
    What does this mean?

Answer for where you are physically now, not where you live or hold residency.

  8. 8.Do you have a passport that is valid for at least the next 6 months?
    What does this mean?

Check the expiry date on your passport. If it expires within 6 months, you will usually need to renew it before the application is lodged, because the visa is linked to your passport.

  9. 9.Have you ever had a visa refused or cancelled, for Australia or any other country?
    What does this mean?

Include any visa refused or cancelled by any country, not just Australia, even if it was many years ago or you later got a visa. Also include any application you withdrew after being told it might be refused.

  10. 10.Have you ever been charged with or convicted of a criminal offence in any country?
    What does this mean?

Include any charge or conviction in any country, even if it was minor, a long time ago, dismissed, spent or a fine only (for example, drink driving). Home Affairs asks for all of them, and leaving one out can cause more trouble than the offence itself.

  11. 11.Does anyone included in the application have a significant or ongoing health condition?
    What does this mean?

For example, a condition that needs ongoing treatment or medication, a past or current tuberculosis infection, a serious heart, kidney or liver condition, or a condition that may need significant medical care in Australia. Most conditions do not stop a visa, but they need to be assessed. Health information is kept confidential.

  12. 12.Does anyone included in the application owe money to the Australian Government that has not been repaid or arranged to be repaid?
    What does this mean?

For example, unpaid Centrelink or Medicare debts, unpaid hospital bills at an Australian public hospital, or costs from a previous removal or detention. Choose 'Not sure' if you don't know.
