Eligibility check: Visitor visa

Subclass 600

Answer these 11 questions. It takes about three minutes. Tap “What does this mean?” under any question if you’re not sure how to answer.

  1. 1.What is the main purpose of your visit?
    What does this mean?

Choose the main reason for your trip. Visitor visas allow tourism, visiting family or friends, and business meetings or conferences, but not paid work or long courses of study.

  2. 2.How long do you plan to stay in Australia?
    What does this mean?

Visitor visas are usually granted for up to 3, 6 or 12 months. Choose the length you are planning for, not the longest you would like.

  3. 3.Can you pay for your trip and stay, or has someone agreed to support you?
    What does this mean?

You need to show you can pay for your first year of tuition, living costs (about $30,000 a year for a single student, updated from time to time) and travel. The money can come from you, your parents or your partner, and must be genuinely available to you.

  4. 4.Do you have a job, study, family or property to return home to?
    What does this mean?

Examples include a job you are returning to, study you are enrolled in, family who depend on you, or a home or business you own. These help show Home Affairs that your visit is temporary.

  5. 5.Have you ever stayed in Australia or another country longer than your visa allowed?
    What does this mean?

This means staying on after your visa ended, even for a day, in Australia or in any other country.

  6. 6.Are you in Australia now?
    What does this mean?

Answer for where you are physically now, not where you live or hold residency.

  7. 7.Do you have a passport that is valid for at least the next 6 months?
    What does this mean?

Check the expiry date on your passport. If it expires within 6 months, you will usually need to renew it before the application is lodged, because the visa is linked to your passport.

  8. 8.Have you ever had a visa refused or cancelled, for Australia or any other country?
    What does this mean?

Include any visa refused or cancelled by any country, not just Australia, even if it was many years ago or you later got a visa. Also include any application you withdrew after being told it might be refused.

  9. 9.Have you ever been charged with or convicted of a criminal offence in any country?
    What does this mean?

Include any charge or conviction in any country, even if it was minor, a long time ago, dismissed, spent or a fine only (for example, drink driving). Home Affairs asks for all of them, and leaving one out can cause more trouble than the offence itself.

  10. 10.Does anyone included in the application have a significant or ongoing health condition?
    What does this mean?

For example, a condition that needs ongoing treatment or medication, a past or current tuberculosis infection, a serious heart, kidney or liver condition, or a condition that may need significant medical care in Australia. Most conditions do not stop a visa, but they need to be assessed. Health information is kept confidential.

  11. 11.Does anyone included in the application owe money to the Australian Government that has not been repaid or arranged to be repaid?
    What does this mean?

For example, unpaid Centrelink or Medicare debts, unpaid hospital bills at an Australian public hospital, or costs from a previous removal or detention. Choose 'Not sure' if you don't know.
